Unloaded BB gun found in child's lunchbox at Johnstown Learning Lamp, officials say
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Police were called to a Learning Lamp location on McKinley Avenue in Johnstown Friday after a child brought a BB gun to the child care center, according to a release from Learning Lamp CEO Leah Spangler.
The release says staffers found the unloaded BB gun in the child’s lunchbox.
Upon discovery, the release says, staffers immediately removed the BB gun and contacted police, who confirmed the weapon was unloaded and that no one was in danger.
“Police and our center staff are taking the situation very seriously. Staff acted quickly and capably to the incident and it is now resolved. We believe this is an isolated incident and will not occur again,” Spangler said in the release.
The Center Director, Karen Machak, says moving forward they are asking parents not to bring backpacks, diaper bags, and any other type of bag into the center.
Machak says all lunchboxes will be handed to the child’s teacher at drop off to be checked, and school age backpacks and lunches will be inspected upon arrival during the school year.
