The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially promoted assistant coach Teryl Austin to be the team's next defensive coordinator, according to a team release.

Austin, who has spent the last four years with the Steelers' organization, would replace former defensive coordinator Keith Butler, who announced his retirement last month.

"T.A. is a great coach. I love his attention to detail," said safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. "The way he approaches the game. He lets players have a voice. A lot of coaches don't really let players have a voice. He loves the game. He played in the past, so he has a natural love of the game and it's reflective in the way he coaches. He is a guy with a whole lot of experience as well. There's not too much he hasn't seen."

Austin previously served as a defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions and the Cincinnati Bengals, and is beginning his 19th season in the NFL.

He is also a native of Sharon, Pa and a University of Pittsburgh graduate.
